Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a stern warning to the United Kingdom following London’s formal recognition of Palestine as a state. In a statement released on September 21, 2025, Netanyahu described the move as “an enormous prize for terror” and reaffirmed Israel’s rejection of Palestinian sovereignty.
“I have a clear message for leaders recognizing a Palestinian state after the October 7 massacre: You are rewarding terror,” Netanyahu said. He emphasized that Israel will not allow a Palestinian state to emerge west of the Jordan River, citing national security concerns.
Israel’s Security Concerns
Netanyahu’s remarks highlight Israel’s deepening tensions with Western nations pursuing recognition of Palestinian statehood. Citing the October 7 Hamas-led attack, which killed approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel, Netanyahu argued that concessions would empower militant groups.
He also noted Israel’s continued expansion of settlements in Judea and Samaria, framing these actions as necessary for security and deterrence. “For years I have prevented the creation of that terror state, against tremendous domestic and international pressure,” he added.
UK’s Decision to Recognize Palestine
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the UK’s recognition of Palestine as a state, citing a commitment to reviving peace negotiations and preserving the viability of a two-state solution. Starmer framed the decision as a response to ongoing violence in the region and a step toward ensuring a political future for Palestinians.
“This recognition seeks to keep alive the possibility of peace and a genuine two-state solution,” Starmer said, stressing that the UK’s action does not undermine Israel’s security.
The UK joins countries like Ireland, Norway, and Spain, which have also moved toward recognizing Palestinian statehood, increasing diplomatic pressure on Israel as the Gaza conflict continues into its 11th month.
International Reactions
While the White House has not formally recognized Palestine, it reaffirmed support for a two-state solution. Israel’s warning to the UK reflects the broader geopolitical tension surrounding Palestinian recognition, highlighting the complex balance between security concerns and international diplomatic efforts.
