Israel Gaza City Offensive Intensifies Amid Ceasefire Talks

The Israel Gaza City offensive escalated dramatically overnight; consequently, residents reported heavy bombardment on the outskirts of the Hamas stronghold. Subsequently, the Israeli military confirmed its troops have begun initial operations to encircle the area. Furthermore, it authorized a major call-up of 60,000 reservists. As a result, this move deepens fears of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe for the trapped civilian population.

International outcry has grown over the planned ground invasion. For instance, the Red Cross condemned the expansion of fighting as “intolerable.” Meanwhile, mediators anxiously await Israel’s official response to a latest ceasefire proposal that Hamas has already accepted, thereby creating a tense stalemate.

Gaza City residents described a night of relentless violence. “The house shakes with us all night long — the sound of explosions, artillery, warplanes, ambulances, and cries for help is killing us,” said Ahmad Al-Shanti, a resident. Similarly, many others echoed the terrifying experience and expressed fear over having nowhere safe to go. In response, the Israeli military stated its recent operations have “created the conditions” to intensify pressure on Hamas, thus setting the stage for the next phase of its campaign.

The United Nations humanitarian agency (OCHA) issued a stark warning. Specifically, it stated that the Israel Gaza City offensive plan would have a “horrific humanitarian impact.” Moreover, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to move south, it said, is a “recipe for further disaster and could amount to forcible transfer.” Additionally, the UN Human Rights office also voiced grave concern for families trapped without access to food, water, or medicine.

The Israel Gaza City offensive comes amid a delicate diplomatic backdrop. Previously, Qatar and Egypt, backed by the United States, have been mediating talks. According to sources, the latest ceasefire proposal involves the release of hostages and bodies held in Gaza. In turn, Hamas has criticized the military escalation, calling it a “blatant disregard” for the ceasefire efforts. Ultimately, the conflict began after Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, which killed 1,219 people. Since then, Israel’s subsequent offensive in Gaza has resulted in over 62,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
