The Ham Group of Companies is a privately-owned Ugandan multinational conglomerate founded by visionary entrepreneur Dr. Hamis Kiggundu. Headquartered at the iconic White House, the group is recognized as one of the largest industrial conglomerates in East Africa, employing over 7,000 people and spanning multiple sectors, from real estate to agro-processing, logistics, banking, education, and entertainment.
History and Origins
The Ham Group was founded in 2005 by Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, who began his entrepreneurial journey in his youth. Growing up, Hamis learned business fundamentals by assisting his father, Hajji Segawa, in his textile shop. During school holidays, he started his first venture using seed capital provided by his father, quickly demonstrating a keen aptitude for business.
Initially, the company focused on garment trading, but as profits grew, Hamis expanded into real estate, buying and selling land and properties across Uganda. In 2009, he formally established Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd, marking the group’s entry into structured property development.
The group’s first major project, Ham Towers in Kampala, was completed in 2010 and signaled a new era for urban development in Uganda. Within 18 months, the company completed Ham Shopping Mall, a project that significantly boosted rental income and allowed Hamis to secure further bank financing for expansion.
By 2021, the Ham Group had diversified into large-scale industrialization, particularly in agro-processing. Its flagship industrial project, the US$156 million Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Plant (IAIP) at Akright City, was designed to add value to Uganda’s agricultural products, reinforcing the group’s vision of promoting industrial growth and food security.
