Etihad Airways is celebrating a significant milestone in its African operations: the 20th anniversary of its direct flights connecting Abu Dhabi to Johannesburg. Since the route first launched in 2005, Etihad has become a key player in linking the UAE to South Africa, carrying nearly two million passengers between the two countries over the years.

Strengthening Ties Between the UAE and South Africa

The 20-year journey has not only contributed to the growth of Etihad’s network but has also played a crucial role in strengthening the cultural, commercial, and tourism connections between the UAE and South Africa. In 2025, the airline welcomed over 100,000 passengers on this route, highlighting its enduring popularity.

Direct Connections and Expanding Reach

Etihad’s flights to Johannesburg provide direct access to Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s capital, and connect passengers to numerous global destinations via Zayed International Airport. The route offers convenient onward travel to popular cities in the Middle East, Europe, North America, the Indian Subcontinent, and the Asia Pacific. Key destinations include Jeddah, Istanbul, Mumbai, Bangkok, and Phuket.

Through partnerships with Southern African carriers, Etihad is improving regional connectivity, ensuring smoother and more accessible travel for passengers.

Etihad’s Vision for Growth in Africa

The anniversary of the Johannesburg route coincides with Etihad Airways’ broader expansion across Africa. The airline has introduced new services to major African cities, such as Tunis, Addis Ababa, and Nairobi, in the last year. Existing routes to destinations like Casablanca and Cairo continue to perform well, integrated into Etihad’s expanding international network.

A strategic partnership with Ethiopian Airlines further strengthens Etihad’s presence on the continent, providing passengers with enhanced access to numerous African destinations beyond the airline’s direct flights.

Growth in Corporate Travel

In 2025, Etihad saw a remarkable 50% growth in corporate travel revenue on the Abu Dhabi-Johannesburg route. This surge is driven by growing economic ties between the UAE and South Africa, as well as Abu Dhabi’s rising status as a global business hub.

Etihad’s Commitment to African Operations

Etihad’s success on the Johannesburg route reaffirms the airline’s commitment to expanding its presence in Africa. The airline plans to upgrade services, strengthen collaborations, and further grow its network to meet the increasing demand for travel across the continent.

By continuing to bridge the gap between Africa and the world, Etihad Airways is well-positioned to be a key player in global aviation for years to come.
