The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has deployed its Shahid Bagheri aircraft carrier, a move that has raised concerns amid ongoing domestic unrest and escalating regional tensions. Satellite images, published by analyst Mehdi H. on social media platform X, confirmed the vessel’s deployment on January 26, showing it anchored about five kilometers south of the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas.

Although the IRGC has not provided an official explanation for this activity, several factors may be at play. One possibility is that the deployment is part of scheduled sea trials. However, the ship’s positioning near Bandar Abbas could also be a precautionary measure, intended to safeguard the vessel amid potential unrest at the port. The deployment may also be linked to growing regional tensions, with the IRGC opting to move a key combat asset to sea for operational security.

Shahid Bagheri: Iran’s First Aircraft Carrier

Commissioned on February 6, 2025, Shahid Bagheri is hailed by Iranian sources as the country’s first aircraft carrier, although its operational capabilities remain a subject of debate. The vessel, which was originally the container ship Perarin, was retrofitted to accommodate a flight deck and a ski-jump ramp for aircraft takeoff. The ship measures approximately 240 meters in length.

While the conversion gives the ship a distinctive design, it also prevents a conventional aircraft carrier layout. The flight deck is angled rather than straight, allowing for aircraft takeoff and landing despite the unusual structure. The effectiveness of this configuration, particularly in terms of the range and types of aircraft that can operate from the ship, remains uncertain.

Purpose and Capabilities of Shahid Bagheri

The primary function of Shahid Bagheri is the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and helicopters. The vessel is capable of operating in sea states up to 9 and has an impressive range of 22,000 nautical miles, which theoretically allows it to remain deployed for up to a year without refueling. This extended range enables it to conduct operations in remote regions of the world’s oceans.

The vessel’s armament includes a range of defensive and offensive systems: eight Noor anti-ship missiles, eight Kowsar-222 surface-to-air missiles, a 30-mm automatic cannon, and reports suggest two remotely operated turrets armed with 20-mm cannons. These weapons are designed to provide both protection and offensive capabilities during operations.

Shahid Bagheri’s deployment comes at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, where the strategic positioning of military assets like this aircraft carrier is critical in shaping regional power dynamics.
