WhatsApp is preparing to roll out voice and video calling directly within its web browser interface, addressing one of the platform’s most notable feature gaps. As confirmed by WABetaInfo, a trusted source for WhatsApp updates, the calling features are currently in development and will be available to users soon. Although these features have not yet reached beta testers, anticipation is growing as users look forward to the new functionality.
The new update will support both individual and group calls, with users able to join group conversations featuring up to 32 participants. Initially, WhatsApp plans to start with a smaller cap of 8 or 16 participants as they refine the feature before scaling up for larger groups. This will be especially useful for users on shared or work computers where installing desktop applications isn’t feasible. The update means users will be able to fully utilize WhatsApp’s calling capabilities directly within their browser, without needing to download any applications.
This web version will mirror the functionality already available on WhatsApp’s mobile apps. Users will have the ability to generate shareable links for their calls, allowing them to select whether the call is for voice or video. WhatsApp is also planning to support the ability to schedule calls ahead of time, with features such as names and descriptions to help organize calls more efficiently.
Another key improvement with this update is the enhanced notification management for incoming calls. Users will be able to control how notifications appear and manage incoming calls directly through their web browser. This brings WhatsApp Web closer to feature parity with its mobile and desktop versions. While WhatsApp previewed web calling last year, support for group calls was still in its early stages. This update now includes the infrastructure needed for group chat functionality.
Meta has yet to announce a specific release date, but given the development progress and demand from users, the feature is expected to roll out in the coming weeks. This update further strengthens WhatsApp’s position as a versatile communication tool, especially when compared to services like Apple’s FaceTime, which is limited to the Apple ecosystem. WhatsApp’s cross-platform support, spanning Android, iOS, and now web browsers, offers users the flexibility to connect seamlessly across different devices and operating systems.
