WhatsApp to Allow Chats Without Phone Numbers in Major Privacy Update

Dubai | October 6, 2025 — WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a groundbreaking update that will allow users to chat without revealing their phone numbers, in what experts describe as one of the most significant privacy shifts in the platform’s history.

According to WABetaInfo, a trusted source that monitors WhatsApp development, the Meta-owned messaging giant is currently testing a new username feature designed to let users connect through unique handles rather than traditional phone numbers.

The move marks a strategic effort by WhatsApp to reduce spam, enhance privacy, and bring its identity system closer to social networks like Instagram and Telegram — both of which already use usernames for direct contact.

A Major Leap for User Privacy

Until now, WhatsApp required users to share their personal phone numbers to initiate chats, a system that often exposed users to spam, unwanted contact, and privacy concerns. With the new update, users will be able to create and share personalized usernames, allowing them to communicate securely without exposing their number.

Reports indicate that the feature is currently being tested in beta versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS, with users seeing a new section in account settings where they can set or “reserve” their username. These usernames must contain at least one letter and may only include lowercase letters, numbers, periods, or underscores.

How the Username Feature Works

Once live, users will be able to search for or start conversations using someone’s username instead of their number. This could revolutionize how individuals and businesses interact on WhatsApp — particularly for those who want to engage customers, clients, or community groups without compromising personal information.

The app is also expected to introduce username verification tools to prevent duplication and impersonation. Early reports from Interesting Engineering and Euro Weekly News suggest users will soon have the option to display only their username in chats or groups, effectively concealing their phone number from unfamiliar contacts.

Aligned With Meta’s Privacy-First Strategy

Industry analysts say the change reflects Meta’s broader mission to prioritize privacy and user control across its family of apps, which includes Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

A source close to Meta explained that the company has been working to “give users more ways to connect safely without relying entirely on phone-based identities.”

By decoupling phone numbers from user discovery and chat initiation, WhatsApp aims to combat spam and make the platform safer for personal and business interactions — particularly in emerging markets where it serves as a primary communication tool.

Beta Testing and Official Rollout

The username feature is being tested in the latest Android beta version (2.25.28.12), where some testers have been allowed to reserve preferred usernames ahead of the public release.

Although WhatsApp has not yet announced an official launch date, sources familiar with the project expect a global rollout within the next few weeks, beginning with verified users and business accounts.

When fully implemented, the feature will mark a transformative step in digital communication, allowing WhatsApp’s 2 billion users worldwide to message safely, privately, and more confidently than ever.
