UN Sanctions Set to Resume Against Iran

The Iran sanctions are set to be reimposed by the United Nations, marking a return of strict economic and military measures a decade after their initial lifting under the landmark nuclear deal, the JCPOA. The move follows complaints from the UK, France, and Germany, which accused Tehran of failing to meet its commitments under the agreement.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the sanctions as “unfair, unjust, and illegal,” emphasizing that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. Despite attempts by China and Russia to delay the sanctions by six months, the UN Security Council approved the measures, which will take effect at 00:00 GMT on Sunday.

Tensions escalated after the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2016 under President Donald Trump, leading Iran to increase nuclear activities previously restricted under the JCPOA. Israeli and U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites in June further complicated diplomacy, while Iran temporarily barred IAEA inspectors from accessing its facilities.

The renewed sanctions are comprehensive and include:

  • An arms embargo on Iran
  • Restrictions on uranium enrichment
  • A ban on ballistic missile-related activities
  • Asset freezes and travel bans on key Iranian figures
  • Authority for countries to inspect Iranian air and shipping cargo

Iran has engaged with the IAEA this week to ensure inspections continue, warning that sanctions could jeopardize ongoing negotiations. Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi accused Western powers of failing diplomacy, highlighting that negotiations with the U.S. have reached a dead end.

Despite sanctions and international pressure, Iran insists its nuclear program is purely civilian and will remain compliant with the Non-Proliferation Treaty, provided guarantees that its facilities will not face attacks. Meanwhile, Russia signed a $25 billion deal to build four nuclear reactors in southern Iran, signaling continued international collaboration.

The reimposition of Iran sanctions underscores growing global concerns over nuclear proliferation, regional security, and the fragile state of Middle East diplomacy.
