Sphere Abu Dhabi: UAE’s New Immersive Venue
Sphere Abu Dhabi will soon transform the UAE’s entertainment scene. The Department of Culture and Tourism — Abu Dhabi (DCT) has signed a 25-year agreement with Sphere Entertainment to bring the groundbreaking venue to the capital. The deal also grants DCT exclusive rights to build and operate similar venues across the Middle East and North Africa for at least a decade after the Abu Dhabi opening.
What Makes Sphere Abu Dhabi Special
Sphere Abu Dhabi will be the second venue of its kind after the Las Vegas Sphere, which opened in September 2023. That venue attracted over 24 million visitors in its first year. The Abu Dhabi version will offer the same immersive entertainment technology, enabling artists and technologists to create powerful experiences that combine reality with imagination.
DCT will fund the construction entirely. Meanwhile, Sphere Entertainment will provide operational, creative, and strategic expertise. The franchise agreement includes options to extend for two additional 10-year terms.

Deal Details and Exclusive Rights
According to a July 28 SEC filing, DCT will pay a franchise initiation fee and ongoing royalties for the use of Sphere’s intellectual property, including “The Sphere Experience” content. The agreement also covers branding, patents, and exclusive operational rights in the region.
The new venue will be built in a prime location in Abu Dhabi. However, officials have not yet announced the exact site or opening date. This exclusivity ensures that DCT holds the only rights to develop Sphere venues in the Middle East and North Africa for years to come.
The Las Vegas Sphere Inspiration
The Las Vegas Sphere set a global benchmark for entertainment venues. It features a 16K resolution wraparound LED screen, advanced 4D effects, and precision beamforming audio. The venue seats 17,600 people and accommodates up to 20,000 in total.
Outside, the massive LED display covers 54,000 m², making it the largest in the world. The project cost $2.3 billion, making it the most expensive entertainment venue ever built in the Las Vegas Valley. Designed by the architectural firm Populous, it quickly became a global icon.
What’s Next for Sphere Entertainment
Sphere Entertainment, controlled by the Dolan family, plans to expand internationally. Executive Chairman James Dolan confirmed that smaller versions are in development. These compact Spheres could roll out in various markets, offering the same high-impact visuals and sound in a more accessible format.
For Abu Dhabi, the upcoming Sphere promises more than live shows. It is expected to enhance tourism, increase cultural engagement, and strengthen the city’s position as a leading global entertainment hub.
When it opens, Sphere Abu Dhabi will not just be another venue. It will be a landmark destination that blends technology, art, and storytelling in ways the region has never experienced before.
