Syria’s Foreign Ministry Warns of Consequences if Ceasefire Collapses Again, Highlights Commitment to National Security
The Syrian government has strongly criticized the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), accusing them of breaching ceasefire agreements and undermining national sovereignty. A diplomatic source at Syria’s Foreign Ministry stated that the country reserves the full right to protect its borders and maintain security amidst growing tensions in the region. The source elaborated that the SDF’s actions, particularly in areas east of the Euphrates, have stemmed from policies outside of state authority, directly challenging the Syrian government’s efforts to maintain law and order.
The March 10 ceasefire agreement, initially designed to bring peace to the region, collapsed due to what the government described as a lack of seriousness from the SDF and attempts to impose a separatist agenda. However, after exhausting diplomatic options, a new agreement was reached on January 18, marking a renewed effort to restore stability and address rising security threats. According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, this new deal emphasizes Syria’s sovereignty and its authority over all matters of national security.
Syria’s Sovereignty and Security: A Clear Stance
Under the terms of the new agreement, all heavy and medium weapons are to be handed over to the Syrian government. The government has made it clear that it alone holds the right to control arms within its borders, highlighting the importance of enforcing national sovereignty. The Ministry’s source warned that Syria would pursue various measures, ranging from political solutions to limited military action, to protect civilians and address instability if the ceasefire fails again.
The government’s position is resolute: Syria’s sovereignty and territorial unity are non-negotiable. The issue of integrating the SDF into Syria’s state institutions is considered an internal matter, with the Syrian government coordinating with its allies and engaging friendly nations to ensure that its actions are understood as part of its broader fight against terrorism. The government also emphasized its ongoing efforts to prevent the resurgence of ISIS and safeguard regional security.
ISIS Detention Facilities and National Control
The Syrian government also addressed the situation concerning ISIS detention facilities, which are currently under SDF control. The Ministry rejected any attempts to politicize the issue and reaffirmed its readiness to take control of these prisons, holding the SDF responsible for any violations or mismanagement. Syria’s commitment to protecting all its citizens, regardless of their background, remains firm. The government has assured that it will work to secure these detention centers and maintain order in the region.
Furthermore, the Syrian government reiterated its focus on economic recovery and stability. The return of oil, gas, and water resources to Syrian control is a significant step in ensuring the country’s long-term economic stability. These resources are now being used to improve public services, support reconstruction efforts, and provide a foundation for future growth, signaling a commitment to rebuilding and securing the nation’s prosperity.
