The OPEC+ oil production increase scheduled for October marks a slower but steady adjustment in the group’s recent policy shift. On Sunday, the alliance announced that it will raise output by 137,000 barrels per day, following a September hike of 547,000 barrels.

Production hike details

The decision was made after a virtual meeting between eight OPEC+ members: Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, UAE, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman. Delegates confirmed that the group may restore part or all of the 1.65 million barrels per day of voluntary cuts introduced in April 2023, depending on market conditions.

The producers emphasized the importance of flexibility, noting that adjustments could be paused or reversed if necessary. The move is also designed to accelerate compensation for countries that exceeded their production quotas since January 2024.

Policy shift since April 2025

This marks another step in OPEC+’s reversal of its long-standing output cut strategy. Since April 2025, the group has raised quotas by nearly 2.5 million barrels per day, prioritizing market share over defending prices. The shift also reflects pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has urged the group to boost supply to ease gasoline prices.

Oil prices response

Despite the added supply, oil prices have not fallen as sharply as expected. Brent Crude closed Friday at $65.5 per barrel, down 2.2% on the day but still well above the 2025 low of $58 per barrel recorded in April. Analysts say this shows that while OPEC+ supply affects the market, broader factors such as global demand and geopolitical risks continue to shape pricing.

Outlook

The OPEC+ oil production increase highlights the group’s balancing act between market stability and economic pressures. With energy markets still volatile, the alliance will continue to monitor global conditions before making further adjustments to its output strategy.
