September 29, 2025 — Rome, Italy — Italy and Bahrain have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) worth over $1.17 billion, aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two nations. The MOU was signed following a high-level meeting in Rome between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Bahrain’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

A Strategic Partnership for Economic Growth

The memorandum will focus on increasing trade and investment in key sectors including energy, defense, and infrastructure. According to the joint statement, the partnership commits both countries to significant investments, totaling over one billion euros ($1.2 billion), which reflects the growing strength of their economic relations.

The agreement is seen as a major step in enhancing the longstanding ties between Italy and Bahrain, particularly in sectors critical to both nations’ future growth and stability.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The MOU will foster cooperation in several strategic areas:

  • Energy: Italy and Bahrain will explore opportunities for joint projects, particularly in energy production, with a focus on renewable energy technologies.
  • Defense: Both countries have agreed to collaborate on defense technologies and innovations, bolstering their mutual security frameworks.
  • Infrastructure: The deal will also focus on enhancing infrastructure development through investments in both countries, opening up avenues for increased bilateral trade.

Diplomatic and Humanitarian Support

In addition to economic collaboration, the leaders emphasized the importance of addressing global issues. Both Italy and Bahrain called for the end of the war in Gaza, supporting the release of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas. They also condemned unilateral or violent actions in the West Bank, reaffirming their commitment to a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

The memorandum underscores both countries’ shared commitment to humanitarian assistance for Gaza’s population, ensuring full and safe access to aid.

A Stronger Future for Italy-Bahrain Relations

This move signals growing economic and diplomatic engagement between Italy and Bahrain, as both countries position themselves as important players in global trade and investment. With the MOU’s focus on crucial sectors like energy and defense, the partnership is set to shape a positive trajectory for bilateral relations and contribute to regional stability and economic prosperity.

The agreement follows a broader trend of growing cooperation between countries in the Middle East and Europe, as they seek to address pressing global issues while fostering long-term partnerships that are beneficial for all parties involved.
