In a strategic move to enter the Middle Eastern market, Universal Studios is reportedly in the early planning stages of building a theme park in Saudi Arabia. This marks a significant shift in the ongoing rivalry between Universal and Disney, who are both eyeing the lucrative region.
The Qiddiya Project and Saudi Arabia’s Growing Tourism Sector
The new Universal theme park might be located at Qiddiya, Saudi Arabia’s upcoming mega entertainment and sports city, which is set to become home to several major attractions, including Six Flags Qiddiya City. Brian Roberts, CEO of Comcast (Universal’s parent company), recently visited Saudi Arabia and confirmed that Universal Studios is considering Qiddiya as a possible location.
Qiddiya is already set to become a significant hub for tourism and entertainment, with plans for luxury hotels, sporting arenas, and cultural venues. If the Universal park is confirmed, it would further solidify the Kingdom’s position as a rising global tourism destination.
Competition with Disney and Future Prospects
The potential Universal Studios park would rival Disney’s plans for a park in Abu Dhabi. After an earlier deal with Dubailand fell through during the 2009 financial crisis, Universal is now making a renewed push to expand its presence in the region. However, despite these developments, no finalized agreements have been made yet, and the park may not open until the 2030s.
A New Era for Middle Eastern Tourism
Universal Studios’ entry into Saudi Arabia would further boost the Kingdom’s ambitions to diversify its economy and develop its tourism sector. With major players like Universal and Disney planning to expand in the region, the Middle East is set to become a major player in global theme park tourism.
