Israel Intercepts 14 Gaza-Bound Aid Boats Amid International Criticism

Israeli naval forces have intercepted 14 boats carrying humanitarian aid and activists heading to Gaza. The action has drawn widespread international criticism.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which organized the mission, said several boats were stopped while navigating international waters. Activists reported that Israeli forces used aggressive tactics, including water cannons, bright lights, and attempts to ram smaller boats. Some communications equipment was jammed, forcing activists to discard mobile phones to protect sensitive information.

Videos released by Israel’s Foreign Ministry showed activists, including environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg, on deck surrounded by soldiers. Despite the interception, the flotilla insists its mission is nonviolent and purely humanitarian.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed Australian nationals were aboard some vessels. The government expressed “deep concern” and pledged consular support while coordinating with Israeli authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry defended its actions. They said the flotilla ignored repeated warnings to alter course and violated a maritime blockade. Israel offered to transfer aid through Ashdod port as an alternative to direct delivery.

The flotilla organizers say they will continue their mission. They are calling for global attention to Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. Human rights groups and international observers criticized the interception and urged dialogue to ensure aid reaches civilians safely.
