Four Global Giants Compete for $5B Qatar Offshore Megaproject

Tokyo – Four of the world’s leading engineering and offshore contractors are now competing for a massive $5 billion contract issued by QatarEnergy LNG for the next phase of its North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) project, according to a report by Upstream.

The NFPS initiative is vital to Qatar’s long-term natural gas strategy, focused on maintaining and enhancing output from the North Field—the world’s largest non-associated natural gas field. The project will include the development of offshore compression complexes that play a critical role in sustaining high-volume gas production for decades to come.

Saipem Among Key Players

Among the major contenders is Saipem, the Italian multinational oilfield services giant. Already a core contractor in earlier phases of the NFPS project, Saipem has handled major responsibilities, including engineering design, fabrication, and offshore installation.

With this next phase of the NFPS, QatarEnergy LNG is strategically reinforcing its leadership in global LNG supply. The new developments align with its North Field West expansion, which targets a record LNG production capacity of 142 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2030—up from around 77 MTPA today.

“This phase of the NFPS project is central to Qatar’s ambition to maintain its dominance in the LNG market amid rising global demand,” industry insiders noted.

Driving LNG Expansion and Energy Security

The QatarEnergy LNG megaproject is part of a multi-phase offshore infrastructure push designed to secure long-term energy supply, enhance output, and meet future energy market demands. The project also underscores Qatar’s aggressive approach to sustainability and innovation in offshore production.

Global Attention and Strategic Importance

The tender has attracted significant attention from international bidders due to its technical complexity, strategic location, and scale of investment. If awarded, it will represent one of the largest offshore gas infrastructure contracts globally in 2025.

The expansion of the North Field will not only strengthen Qatar’s energy exports but also boost the country’s influence as a central player in global energy security and cleaner transition fuels, especially as LNG demand grows across Asia and Europe.
